DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation, City of Cartersville

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for performing a variety of general & skilled maintenance and custodial duties at Park and Recreation facilities.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Operates trucks, tractors and various machinery and tools to maintain parks and recreation facilities. Commercial Driver’s License preferred must be able to attain within one-1year. 
  • Train/work with co-workers to teach skilled trade(s).
  • Cut, trims trees, shrubbery, as needed.
  • Applies herbicides and pesticides.
  • Assists with maintenance of swimming pools; monitors chemical levels and adds chemicals as necessary; cleans and vacuums. 
  • Performs carpentry work and repairs.
  • Performs plumbing duties on buildings and irrigation systems.
  • Performs custodial duties at city parks and facilities.
  • Performs minor electrical repairs.
  • Performs welding and metal fabrication
  • Current Certified Pool Operator certification, or willing to obtain
  • Moves and sets up various equipment and bleachers.
  • Some weekend time required.
  • Attend clinics, seminars, education classes, etc. related to job duties.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of building and grounds maintenance methods and practices.
  • Knowledge of departmental and safety rules and regulations.
  • Experience in welding
  • Experience in general & skilled maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of various chemicals.
  • Skill in operating equipment and various hand tools. 
  • Must be mechanically inclined and experienced in equipment, small engine, and facilities upkeep and repairs.
  • Skill in operating a dump truck, tractor & implements, bobcat or front load tractor for landscaping or excavating.
  • Skill in following instructions.
  • Skill in oral and written communication and operating communication equipment. Knowledge of modern office equipment, preferred.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Maintenance Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. Completed work is reviewed for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include departmental and safety policies and procedures, material safety data sheets, standard maintenance practices, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied general maintenance of department facility and repair duties. The variety of duties performed contributes to the complexity of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to maintain Parks and Recreation Department facilities. Successful performance helps ensure a safe and comfortable environment for employees, program participants and park patrons.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, volunteers/community service workers, vendors and the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to exchange information, provide services and resolve problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is performed while sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, or crouching. The employee must lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and able to distinguish between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed indoors and outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, contagious or infectious diseases, chemicals, machinery with moving parts, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as necessary.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT REPSONSIBILITY: This position exercises functional supervision over part time, seasonal employees, correction work crews and volunteer/community service workers.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid CDL class “A” or “B” driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
