Refuse Collector/Driver
Classification: Fulltime
Department: Solid Waste/Public Works
Job Summary: This position is responsible for driving a refuse truck along a residential route to collect refuse within the City of Cartersville.
Major Duties:
- Inspects the truck prior to leaving on route to ensure that it is properly cleaned, serviced and equipped.
- Drives a refuse truck along a predetermined residential route to collect refuse; transfers refuse to landfill.
- Empties refuse into truck.
- Operates a two-way radio.
- Performs minor preventative maintenance and repairs on the truck, such as checking air pressure, brakes, lights, belts, and fluid levels; cleans and washes truck; informs supervisor of vehicle repair needs.
- Assists other department crews and drivers with leaf and limb removal duties, as needed.
- Collects discarded items, yard waste, and junk from curbsides and streets.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
- Knowledge of the geographic layout of the city.
- Knowledge of residential refuse collection routes.
- Knowledge of departmental and safety rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of the operation of the truck and related equipment.
- Skill in defensive driving techniques.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
Qualifications:
- Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Commercial driver's license (CDL-B) issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
