Job Title: Fiber/PC Technician

Department: FiberCom, City of Cartersville

Job Summary: This position is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the city’s network, personal computers, and providing support/assistance for the City’s Fiber Optic Network.

PAY: $28.50/hourly

Major Duties:

  • Maintain computers for City Departments including desktop/laptop/tablets/Smart Boards/voice communication devices.
  • Support/Maintain electronic facility access control systems, including user addition/deletion, modification of time zones/access levels, diagnosis of inputs/outputs, and daily maintenance of data integrity.
  • Provide support in maintenance/installation of security surveillance systems in City facilities, including retrieval/delivery of sensitive surveillance video/audio as requested.
  • Install and perform maintenance of computer peripherals (software and hardware), including specialized Public Safety software applications, i.e., GCIC, CJIS, Dash Cams, Body Cams, Mobile Data Terminals, Mobile Citation Printers, Crime Mapping, New World Systems (Fire Department Records Management System, Law Enforcement Records Management System, CAD), Various Information Systems, etc.
  • Assist FiberCom personnel in phone, cell, radio, network, PC, multi-media equipment and other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills Preferred:

  • Knowledge of Windows, Android OS and IOS; Microsoft Office 365; Microsoft Exchange. (i.e., loading and configuration); Records Management Systems (New World Systems), various applications,
  • Knowledge of the city code of ordinances and other regulations, policies, and procedures relevant to the function of the position.
  • Knowledge of computer network administration.
  • Knowledge of personal computer and network components.
  • Knowledge of communication software tools and monitoring software.
  • Knowledge of communications systems; security (access control) and video surveillance.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws in areas applicable to city government and law enforcement.
  • Ability to learn new processes and adapt to set policies and procedures.
  • Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work.
  • Ability to independently assess/solve complex problems.
  • Skill in the use of electronic test equipment and other specialized equipment.
  • Skill in the use of communication software tools and monitoring software.
  • Skilled in Mobile Technologies/Wireless Networks.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The FiberCom Director assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include city ordinances, policies, and procedures, wiring codes, and relevant state and federal laws and regulations. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: This position consists of varied administrative and technical duties. The need to multitask and a multitude of duties performed contribute to the complexity of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to provide support for technical/information technology issues concerning Public Safety departments. Position also assists other City technology/fiber system personnel as required. Successful performance helps ensure higher quality of technology application/communications throughout the city.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with Public Safety personnel, software/hardware vendors/service providers, engineers, network consultants, co-workers, and the public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, provide services, resolve problems, justify, and settle matters, and motivate personnel.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an interior/office setting but may require working in outdoor environment with varying environmental conditions. May also be required to perform aerial work at heights greater than 8 feet.
