JOB TITLE: Stormwater Maintenance Worker/Truck Driver                                                

DEPARTMENT:  Public Works, City of Cartersville

COMPENSATION:

No CDL:  $18.26-$19.67/hourly 

CDL:        $18.72-$20.16/hourly

JOB SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for performing construction and maintenance duties on stormwater components/projects.  The work of this position, also, involves operating a dump truck to haul dirt and transport materials to and from work sites.  This position may perform a variety of laboring tasks when not operating equipment.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Pours and finishes concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and driveways.
  • Builds catch basins, block walls, and manholes.
  • Assists in setting grade for forms.
  • Operates a dump truck to haul materials to and from work sites.
  • Operates a track loader and rubber tire loader to load materials.
  • Performs construction duties such as laying drainage pipe, setting grade, building catch basins, clearing rights-of-way, setting forms, pouring and finishing concrete, clearing drainage systems, and operating a jack hammer.
  • Lays bricks and blocks.
  • Repairs storm drains.
  • Cleans catch basins.
  • Clears brush and trees from rights-of-way.
  • Installs storm sewer and drainage pipes.
  • Operates equipment, machinery and tools such as air compressor, hand and power tools, tamper, concrete mixers, chain and concrete saws, etc.
  • Operates equipment such as a dump truck, backhoe, front-end loader and hydra tamper.
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment, which includes lubrication and checking air, oil, water and other fluids.
  • Assists in laying and clearing drainage pipe.
  • Maintains tools and equipment.
  • Flags traffic.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

o   Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.

o   Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

o   Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of city and departmental safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of city and departmental policies and procedures pertaining to street and drainage system maintenance and improvement.
  • Knowledge of defensive driving techniques.
  • Knowledge of masonry techniques.
  • Knowledge of carpentry techniques.
  • Skill in setting forms and finishing concrete.
  • Skill in utilizing tools, equipment, and machinery such as chain and concrete saws, concrete mixer, air compressor, hand and power tools, etc.
  • Skill in operating equipment such as a dump truck, backhoe, front-end loader, and hydra tamper.
  • Skill in reading blueprints.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The Crew Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions.  The work is reviewed in progress and upon completion for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include accepted concrete practices, building codes, and city and departmental policies and procedures.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY:  The work consists of related duties in finishing concrete, laying brick, performing basic carpentry duties, driving a dump truck and performing laboring tasks.   Proximity to utility lines and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of this position is to pour and finish concrete and to perform other related street construction and maintenance tasks, as well as, to transport materials to and from job sites.  Successful performance facilitates the construction and maintenance of streets and drainage systems and helps ensure a safe and attractive environment for city residents.

PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with co-workers and the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:   Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is typically performed outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, and occasional inclement weather.  The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:  None.
