JOB TITLE:  Park Maintenance Worker

PAY RATE: $18.26 - $19.19 per hour

DEPARTMENT:  Parks & Recreation, City of Cartersville

 

JOB SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for performing a variety of maintenance and custodial duties at city recreational facilities.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Operates tractor and push mower to mow grass at city parks and sports facilities; may operate a front-end loader.
  • Trims trees, weeds, and edges as needed.
  • Applies herbicides and pesticides.
  • Performs basic carpentry work and repairs; assists in roofing and in building foundations.
  • Performs custodial duties at city parks and facilities: cleans restrooms, restocks soap and paper products, picks up trash, and empties trash cans.
  • Assists with maintenance of swimming pools; monitors chemical levels and adds chemicals as necessary; cleans and vacuums; disassembles, cleans, and repairs chemical pumps and injector systems.
  • Performs minor electrical repairs.
  • Tests and measures chemicals in pools.
  • Performs basic maintenance tasks, such as painting installing sheetrock, hanging wallpaper, repairing plumbing leeks, replacing windows, and replacing light bulbs.
  • Moves and sets up portable equipment and bleachers.
  • Assists with the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of building and grounds maintenance methods and practices.
  • Knowledge of departmental and safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of basic carpentry, plumbing, mechanical repair, and electrical procedures.
  • Knowledge of various cleaning chemicals.
  • Skill in operating specialized cleaning equipment (e.g., buffer, carpet shampoo machine, vacuum cleaner, swimming pool cleaning equipment, etc.) and various hand tools.
  • Skill in operating a tractor and push mower.
  • Skill in following instructions.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Must be at least 16 years old and have a valid Georgia Driver’s License
  • Must be knowledgeable in the use of an ability to operate mowers and landscaping equipment
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to have a flexible work schedule, including early mornings, weekends, holidays, etc.
     

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Crew Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions.  The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include departmental and safety policies and procedures, material safety data sheets, standard maintenance practices, and supervisory instructions.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY:  The work consists of related duties in cleaning and maintaining buildings and grounds.

The variety of duties contributes to the complexity of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of this position is to perform basic maintenance and custodial duties.  Successful performance helps ensure a safe and comfortable environment for departmental activities.

PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, program participants, and the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to exchange information and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The work is performed while sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, or crouching.  The employee must lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is performed indoors and outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, machinery with moving parts, and occasional inclement weather.  The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
