JOB TITLE: Welder

DEPARTMENT: Gas System, City of Cartersville 

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for performing welding duties associated with natural gas line installation, repair, and maintenance.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Utilizes welding equipment to fabricate and repair equipment, meters, mains and service lines.
  • Repairs, removes, and rebuilds old meter sets and builds new ones.
  • Installs new meters, mains and service lines; attaches lines to mains.
  • Drives a welding truck to transport backhoe and other related construction equipment.
  • Drives a service truck to transport trencher or excavator to jobsite.
  • Checks for leaks in lines and meters.
  • Performs hot line tap and stop duties in accordance with established guidelines and procedures.
  • Locates lines for other utility workers.
  • Installs and reads industrial meters; checks industrial regulator stations.
  • Installs and reads residential meters as needed.
  • Trains department personnel, as required.
  • Fills in on work crews as needed.
  • Assists with cathodic protection surveys; installs and services cathodic protection equipment.
  • Performs housekeeping and maintenance duties at meter and regulator stations.
  • Inspects new line installations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of City policies and State codes pertaining to the installation, repair, and maintenance of natural gas mains and lines.
  • Knowledge of welding techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering design plans.
  • Skill in welding fabrication of metering and regulating stations.
  • Skill in inspecting new gas line installations.
  • Skill in operating welding equipment.
  • Skill in the use and operation of overhead cranes.
  • Skill in reading gas meters.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain crane operator training and certification as required by the Gas System.
  • Possession or ability to readily obtain all welder certifications as required by the latest edition of the Gas System’s Operations and Maintenance Manual.

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:

The Construction Supervisor, Distribution Foreman or Lead Service Worker assigns work in terms of general instructions.  The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES:

Guidelines consists of Federal and State regulations and City and departmental policies and procedures.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY:

The work consists of related duties in natural gas facility construction, maintenance and repair. The proximity to potentially explosive gases contributes to the complexity of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT:

The purpose of this position is to construct, repair and service natural gas facilities.  Successful performance helps ensure the safe and efficient operation of the natural gas system.

PERSONAL CONTACTS:

Contacts are typically with co-workers, other utility workers, other City employees, and the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:

Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee must frequently lift light objects, occasionally lift heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and be able to distinguish between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work is performed indoors and outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, inclement weather, and gas leaks. The work requires the use of protective devices such as welding helmets, masks, goggles, or gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
