Hydrant Flows & Maintenance

Fire Hydrant Flow 2023

At Cartersville Fire Department, safety is our top priority. We're committed to ensuring that every fire hydrant in our city is in perfect working condition. Here's how we do it:

Annual Maintenance:
Twice a year, spring and fall, our dedicated crews conduct thorough maintenance on each hydrant within the city limits. We trim vegetation, oil caps, grease stems, and ensure there are no obstructions. This ensures that every hydrant is ready for action when needed. You might spot our crews in your neighborhood during our upcoming maintenance.

Annual Flow Program:
With over 1800 hydrants in our system, we employ a 5-year rotation for flow operations. We conduct flushing and flow assessments annually, ensuring that each individual hydrant is evaluated once every 5 years to determine its water flow capacity. This crucial information helps us respond effectively when called upon, and we also check for any visual issues during this process. This year, our spring flow program will begin on May 6th. Typically, 12-15 hydrants are tested per day and we attempt to have it completed by noon each day.

Data-Driven Approach:
We keep a detailed record of every hydrant's condition in our database. This helps us meet ISO requirements for the highest fire department rating and ensures that our water system is healthy and ready to serve our community in emergencies.

Community Notifications:
We keep our community informed about our testing schedule. Each week, we place signs in the testing areas, and make every effort to notify local businesses in advance of our flow tests.

Water Clarity:
During flow tests, there may be temporary cloudiness in your water due to sediment disturbance. If you experience this issue, simply open all outlets in your residence until the water runs clear. If problems persist, don't hesitate to contact us at 770-387-5635, and we'll be there to assist you.

Join us in maintaining a safer Cartersville. Your safety is our mission.
