JOB TITLE:                Electrical Engineering Coordinator

DEPARTMENT:        Electric, City of Cartersville

JOB SUMMARY:      Under the direction of the Engineering Supervisor performs complete  electric system analysis and provides professional engineering work to  coordinate, plan, design, estimate and prepare specifications for building electrical distribution systems

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and direct the work of electrical engineering technicians in the design and repair of distribution lines, substations, customer services, lighting, control systems, and related engineering tasks necessary to maintain the electrical distribution system.
  • Serve as an engineering liaison between the Engineering Supervisor and consulting engineers, contractors, and electricians on a variety of electrical projects.
  • Draw and revise commercial and residential electrical service distribution maps using computerized drafting methods and geographic information systems (GIS).
  • Performs electrical switching operations as needed for routine maintenance and in emergency situations.
  • Provide design assistance and guidance to less experienced electrical engineering technicians.
  • Provide backup coverage for the Dispatcher.
  • Oversee departmental safety program.
  • Provides technical assistance in preparing industrial proposals.
  • Conduct field inspections of contract work to ensure compliance with state and city standards and codes.
  • Prepare all drawings for joint-use requests to other utilities and maintain communication with company representatives as needed.
  • Investigates complaints from the public.
  • Serves as organizational representative to the Underground Protection Center (UPC)
  • Supervise and assists in drafting technical diagrams and drawings for a variety of projects.
  • Maintains files of all plats, plans, drawings, easements, rights-of-way, and contract documents; prepare and submit applications for DOT and railroad permits.
  • Provide information to assist in and preparation of the annual departmental budget.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION: 

  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques used for electrical engineering, construction, and maintenance projects.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations governing electrical engineering projects as well as the NESC, NEC and other codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the principles and methods of mathematics, trigonometry, algebra, and geometry.
  • Knowledge of surveying and mapping techniques.
  • Knowledge of civil and electrical engineering techniques.
  • Proficient in drafting, surveying, mapping, and reading plans.
  • Proficient in performing engineering computations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of transients and harmonics.
  • Proficient in the use of a personal computer, calculator, level, and a variety of engineering and drafting tools.
  • Proficient in oral and written communication.            

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The Engineering Supervisor assigns work in terms of very general instructions.  Work is reviewed for the nature and accuracy of the final results.

GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include federal regulations, state DOT guidelines, city codes, and standard civil engineering principles and practices.  These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY:  The role consists of varied supervisory and electrical engineering duties.

SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of this assignment is to coordinate engineering and distribution design for the Cartersville Electric System.  Successful performance helps ensure that the electrical distribution system operates in an effective and efficient manner.

PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, federal and state regulatory officials, local elected officials, engineers, developers, contractors, electricians, and the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to exchange information, settle matters, resolve problems, motivate personnel, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The work is performed with the employee sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, or crouching.  The employee must frequently lift light objects, occasionally lift heavy objects, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is performed in an office and outdoors.  The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:  None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree in engineering or related field. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position may be considered in lieu of an Associate’s degree.
  • Proficient in the use of software applications including CAD, GIS, spreadsheet, word processing and database usage.
  • Possession of Integrated Transmission System (ITS) Qualified Operator Certification.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with five to seven years of experience or service.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • The ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language as necessary for the position; the ability to follow written and oral instruction; and be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of the position. Regular, consistent and predictable attendance is also required.
